Elderwick Village, East Yorkshire

All about Elderwick

Although the fictional village of Elderwick is in East Yorkshire, much of the inspiration for the businesses, landscape, and buildings comes from the happy years I spent living in Somerset.

Inspiration for Elderwick

The Pleasant Pheasant Café

I'm inclined to say this was the birthplace of the Elderwick Mysteries series. A small tearoom in Norton-sub-Hamdon, this was a favourite destination when I lived nearby. At the time, it was even run by a woman named Jo, just as it is in the books.

It's now Katy's Bakes and looks incredible. Check it out here:

St Stephen's Church

Elderwick's church is based on St Mary's Church in Stoke-sub-Hamdon, a curious building with a number of notable features including a main door on the north side - the Devil's side, very unusual in an English church - and that's only the start. To learn more I encourage you to visit (& with thanks to): https://www.greatenglishchurches.co.uk/html/stoke_sub_hamdon.html

A real place!

Drumble's Hive

Drumble's Hive

Every book lover is in want of a good bookshop and Laurel is fortunate that the closest town to Elderwick is Beverley, where this delightful emporium can be found - and from where you can purchase A Little Bird Told Me.

Back in Somerset is a magical place called Tinker's Bubble, an off-grid woodland community who make and sell their own apple juice and cider in the nearby village. This photo shows the woodland - top right. In the books, this track is one of Laurel's favourite  places to walk (and was mine).

Elderwick locations

Myrtle Cottage

Laurel's new home in Elderwick, a cosy red-brick cottage with sage green windows and door, postage stamp garden at the front and chickens in the back.

The Plump Tart

Locally famous for thier divine cakes and bread, this the village bakery run by sisters, Hetty and Constance.

The Pleasant Pheasant

A favourite haunt of Laurel and Maggie, where they will inevitably eat bacon and brie sandwiches (Laurel), spanakopita (Maggie), and scones with raspberry jam and cream (both - jam first!)
