Elderwick Village, East Yorkshire

Tucked away on a street of thatched cottages built from honey-coloured Ham stone, I'm inclined to say this was the birthplace of the Elderwick Mystery series. A small tearoom in Norton-sub-Hamdon, this was a favourite destination when I lived nearby. At the time, it was even run by a woman named Jo, just as it is in the books.

Elderwick's church is based on St Mary's Church in Stoke-sub-Hamdon, a curious building with a number of notable features including a main door on the north side - the Devil's side, very unusual in an English church - and that's only the start. Every book lover is in want of a good bookshop and Laurel is fortunate that the closest town to Elderwick is Beverley, where this delightful emporium can be found - and from where you can purchase A Little Bird Told Me.

Back in Somerset is a magical place called Tinker's Bubble, an off-grid woodland community who make and sell their own apple juice and cider in the nearby village. This photo shows the woodland - top right. In the books, this track is one of Laurel's favourite  places to walk (and was mine).
